Fed Chairman Jerome Powell in his congressional testimony-

Interest Rates are headed up and it seems there is no way around it

Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell delivers his mandated semiannual report to Congress this week, with the first stop Tuesday at the House Financial Services committee. In addition to delivering a prepared address, Powell will field questions from lawmakers on monetary policy, the economy and banking regulations.

Markets expect the Fed to hike interest rates three times this year, and Powell's remarks seemed to indicate the central bank remains on a tightening path. He also said the economy remains strong.    Read More

Gun Maker Stocks trading like something is different after Florida massacre-

I rarely stick my neck into politics, but once in a while people need to take a stand and man up about what they believe in and what the right thing to do is whether that will cost you friends, an election or a cyber bullying onslaught. This is one of those times and really this isn’t a political issue, but it always seems our collective government representatives make it so.  I grew up a hunter and my Dad was a part time big game guide in Northern BC. Everyone had guns and used them on an almost daily basis for hunting a variety of game. Certainly I believe in the right for a law abiding, mentally fit, legal resident to own a gun. What is also absolutely clear is that if there were no assault rifles or other large magazine auto and semi-auto weapons on the street they would not end up in the wrong hands and kill masses of people. I’m not current on all aspects of what the rules are now, but In Canada, once you had completed a hunter safety course you were allowed a rifle or shotgun with a 5 shot magazine and one in the barrel. Total 6 rounds without going to the trouble to reload.  A handgun or automatic had to be registered, have a ballistics test and every time you wanted to take it to the gun range you go to the RCMP and get a permit. Part of rule C-17 passed in 1991 reads as follows:

A major focus of C-17 was the control of military and paramilitary firearms. It created orders prohibiting or restricting most paramilitary rifles and some types of non-sporting ammunition. It prohibited firearms that had been converted to avoid a 1978 prohibition (exempting existing owners), and it prohibited high-capacity magazines for automatic and semi-automatic firearms.[9] (It limited handguns to ten rounds and most semi-automatic centre-fire rifles to five rounds.)[10] Read the complete gun law overview here

You can check the records and see that mass shootings in Canada, while certainly a small % of what has happened here due to a much smaller population have resulted in many less victims. I couldn’t find any articles where more than 8 people were killed and a similar number injured. If they can do this in Canada it can be done here as well.

I am sorry if that means some law abiding citizens can’t take a legally owned AR-15 to the gun range and of course they will argue that no gun ever killed anyone by itself. Just ask yourselves if you believe that your right to own an assault rifle is worth hundreds of people’s lives and a substantial number of them children every year.

It’s time to be heard, put the heat on politicians to get these guns off the street and even though this won’t change things overnight and background check legislation and other measures are also needed it will be a huge step in the right direction. Here is one petition you can sign

Gum Maker Stock trading like something is different after Florida massacre-

Gun makers are again the center of a national debate over how to put an end to mass shootings, and their stocks are trading like things are different this time.

Several major U.S. companies have dropped their associations with the National Rifle Association in the last few days, less than two weeks after a 19 year old with a semi-automatic rifle killed 17 people in a high school in Florida. Student protests and calls for action have stayed in the headlines, and politicians are under pressure to enact new gun safety rules.

Sturm Ruger and American Outdoor Brands shares are down 7 percent and 18 percent, respectively, this month and have fallen to a greater degree than they have after past shootings. Read More
